Business Requirements Analysis (BRA)

Business requirements are the critical activities of an enterprise that must be performed by a system to meet the organizational objective(s) while remaining solution independent. It determines the needs or conditions to meet for a new or altered system, taking into account the possible conflicting requirements of the various stakeholders.

The process of defining the needs of a new system should be completed early in the software selection process. It forms the baseline for research and the selection criteria of solution candidates. Basically, it’s hard to hit a target that you can’t see. The BRA process provides this clarity.

Typical objectives of the Business Requirements Analysis engagement are:

  • To gain agreement with the stakeholders
  • To provide a foundation to communicate to a technology service provider what the solution needs to do to satisfy the organization’s needs
  • To provide input into the next phase for this project
  • To describe what, not how the customer/business needs will be met by the solution

Ultimately, completing a Business Requirements Analysis as the first step in your solution selection process minimizes your overall project risk.
